Meta’s Major Outage: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads Disrupted
Meta's services, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, faced a major disruption worldwide. Users encountered difficulties accessing and using these platforms around midnight on Wednesday, Bangladesh time. During this time, new posts were not visible on social media, and users also faced issues with messaging. Many old posts disappeared temporarily from timelines. The outage affected several regions, including Bangladesh, Asia, South America, the United States, Australia, and parts of Europe.
The issues lasted for over three and a half hours. By 3:30 AM Bangladesh time, WhatsApp began to function again, followed by a gradual restoration of Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
Outage-tracking website DownDetector.com reported that Meta’s users experienced significant technical failures. The website showed a large spike in reports of issues with Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, which caused widespread problems for users. Initially, over 10,000 users reported issues accessing Facebook. Within an hour, this number increased to more than 100,000.
Although Meta did not comment immediately, the company later expressed regret via different platforms, including X. On its official X page, Meta said, "We are aware that a technical issue is affecting some people’s ability to access our services. We are working as quickly as possible to resolve the issues and apologize for the inconvenience."
This is not the first instance of issues with Meta’s services. In March and April of this year, similar disruptions occurred. In 2021, Meta experienced the largest technical outage in its history.
